The original version - (here titled “Short & Crooked” and “Long & Crooked”) is what we at Foundation fell in love with. The powerful vocal homage to the late great Chicago singer Fontella Bass has more of an Art Ensemble of Chicago “Theme De Yo Yo” leaning to it… It’s Jazz Dance music but for the 21st Century.
Crooked Man takes things to a next level with his lashing breakbeat drums meeting classic Lester Bowie inspired horns, all honk, bottom end… Bass and breaks. The groove is relentless and Lady Blackbird only adds to the intensity of the track.
The versions here see the fusions abound… The “Crooked Electro” version is the most DJ friendly but is still an odd ball fusion of 80’s electro pulse those horns and that voice.
The “Crooked Dub” is a ridiculous journey… The original “Crooked Version” - coming in at 13.08 minutes… The funk groove of the original is extended and worked to within an inch of its life.
The Theiz Remix sees one of Foundation's favourite electronic/Detroit-inspired producers add a 4x4 making the track deep and dubbed out. Its simple and relentless takes you, the track and Lady Blackbird, deep into the techno underground… A late night dubbed out bomb!

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell

I haven't heard anything as just completely perfectly formed out of the gate--every decision the right one, what to include but more what to exclude--maybe ever. Don't know who Sault is, but they do not sound like they could be anyone who hasn't paid some dues to get this good. Or signed some Satanic contracts. 100% confidence, and it sounds 110% earned.
